AIS Leadership Addresses Challenges, Secures Future
Thursday, November 8, 2012
By AIS President Doug Vogel
I am writing to let you know of recent action that the AIS
Council has taken to ensure the future of the association. The association continues to expand in many
areas, and we are seeing the strengthening of IS programs throughout the world.
Our membership numbers are stable throughout the 100 countries where AIS is
located. And while the association is
stable, it is not without challenges.
In our June meeting, we discussed many issues regarding the
future of the association. Included in
that discussion was a review of the AIS strategic goals and approval of the
annual budget. In that process, it became clear that the resources needed to ensure the long-term stability of the association are insufficient. After thorough deliberation, the Council
voted unanimously to approve an increase in member dues effective as of January 1,
2013.
Increasing member dues is not an item to be taken lightly
and the Council deliberated upon many different options. Some of those options
included eliminating or cutting back on services, increasing other sources of
revenue (such as conference registration fees), and reducing staff. In the end it was determined that the services
that are currently being provided and staff to manage these services are
critical for the continued growth of the association and that additional
services are warranted. As well, the
Council did not believe that we can continue to fund the programs of the association
primarily on the backs of those who attend conferences.
We understand that there may be questions about this Council
decision and we look forward to taking those over the next several months. To
assist in that regard, I am attaching a Question and Answer document which will
help. Also, next week, you will receive another message from AIS Treasurer Matt
Nelson providing more information about the financial picture of the association. I think you'll find that to be quite helpful.
We look forward to continuing to be of service to you and
appreciate your ongoing support.
