1. Why did you originally join AIS, and what has kept you involved?
Early in my doctoral student days, I was encouraged by faculty to become an AIS member. Since then, I have seen so many of the benefits. I regularly attend AIS-sponsored conferences, particularly AMCIS, where I have presented and served as a session chair. I publish in AIS journals, but more importantly gain a lot of my insights from reading through the AIS e-Library. I have benefitted from participating in AIS-organized doctoral consortia, junior faculty consortia, and the AIS mentor program.
2. What's a recent professional accomplishment you're proud of?
I recently had the opportunity to contribute to my university's data analytics program by developing two new courses in data visualization - one for undergraduates and one for graduate students. I had never developed a course before and I discovered a new passion for it through the process. From selecting the course materials to designing the assignments and assessments, it was an extremely fulfilling process. I have now taught the courses successfully a few times and every time, I am so proud of all the work that went into them.
3. What's the best career advice you've ever received?
A leader once told me about work-life balance: It's never really 50/50. You will miss some important family moments for work, and you'll miss some important work deadlines for family. But if you are consistently prioritizing one over the other, you need to take stock before you lose the less prioritized one. I have found that comforting in the challenging years of being an early career professor raising little kids, and am proud to work every day to find success in both areas of life.
4. What's a hidden talent, interesting hobby, or fun fact you'd like to share about yourself?
I played the flute for over ten years, through middle school, high school, and college (and occasionally pick it up in community band these days!). I met my husband in college marching band at Missouri State University.
