20th President of AIS: Helmut Krcmar

Helmut Krcmar has been an active member of the IS community for decades. He is currently the Chair of Information Systems with the Faculty of Informatics at the Technische Universität München (TUM) in Germany.

Professor Krcmar began his doctoral program in 1978 upon graduating from Universität des Saarlandes, Saarbrücken, Germany with a Business Administration degree. As a post-doctoral fellow, he went to work at the IBM Los Angeles Scientific Center and as an associate professor for the Leonard Stern Graduate School of Business, NY University and Baruch College, City University of NY. From 1987-2002, Professor Krcmar was the Chair of Business Informatics at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart. From 2000-2002, he served as the Dean of the Department of Economics and Social Sciences. During this time, he was the youngest Business Administration Professor in Germany. Professor Krcmar began his tenure at TUM in 2002, starting as a faculty member at the TUM School of Management. In 2003, he became the Academic Director of the SAP University Competence Center and served as the Dean of the TUM Department of Informatics from 2010-2013. In 2018, Professor Krcmar was elected Vice Dean of the TUM School of Management and is a Founding Dean of the TUM Campus Heilbronn. Beginning in 2020, he began leading the Research Group Krcmar at the Faculty of Informatics, TUM.

He first began working with AIS in 1995 at its inception and has been a Senior Scholar and valued member ever since. Professor Krcmar held his first position with AIS in 1996 when he was on the Council for Europe/Africa/Middle East and held this position until 1998. Following this, Dr. Krcmar was the President Elect from 2013-2014, President 2014-2015, and Immediate Past Present 2015-2016. In 2016, he was selected as an AIS Fellow, awarded the AIS Best Information Systems Publications Award in 2017, was a founding member of the Germany Chapter of AIS, and has been involved in many AIS conferences over the years.

Professor Krcmar has been a part of numerous committees, editorial boards, and organizations within the field of IS. He conducts research on digital transformation, platform-based ecosystems, information and knowledge management, service management, and e-government and computer-supported collaboration. Professor Krcmar’s work can be seen in the Journal of Management Information Systems, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, Journal of Management Accounting Research, Journal of Information Technology, Information Systems Journal, Wirtschaftsinformatik, and more.
