The AIS Student Chapter Program connects information systems students around the world through leadership, collaboration, and professional development opportunities. Each chapter operates within its university, building community through events, service, and outreach, while also contributing to the broader mission of the Association for Information Systems. The Brigham Young University AIS Student Chapter showcases fostering meaningful engagement at every level.

The chapter has taken a thoughtful, inclusive approach to leadership recruitment and member engagement, and it’s one other chapters might find useful.

The chapter combined broad outreach with personal invitations to attract candidates for board positions. “Our main efforts to recruit potential board members consisted of general broad-scope outreach and personal invitations,” shared Chapter Co-Presidents Hailey Bronson and Bryson Lindsey. “We would announce the openings in our IS classes and regularly send out the application information in our program’s Slack channel.”

They also leaned on the experience of their outgoing officers. “We asked the previous year’s officers to make recommendations on people they knew who they felt would be good additions to the team in general or their specific role. We would then reach out to these individuals and invite them to apply.”

When it came to marketing events, the chapter focused on familiar and effective channels. “Our main marketing efforts included in-person announcements in our IS classes, weekly and specialty announcements in our program Slack channel, and posts/stories on our program’s Instagram page.” This consistent visibility helped keep events top of mind for students and contributed to steady engagement throughout the year.

What’s especially impressive is how the chapter ensured all interested students had meaningful ways to contribute, even beyond officer roles. With more students interested in leadership opportunities than could be accommodated on the board, the chapter created the IS Activity Team (A-Team), a group of students who don’t hold officer positions but want to stay actively involved. “The A-Team works with our VPs of Activities to plan and deliver events,” the Co-Presidents shared. “They meet weekly and play a vital role in our success.”

In fact, participation on the A-Team is viewed as a stepping stone to future leadership. “Being involved with A-Team was a strong factor in our consideration for officers, so those who did not get a VP spot this year would greatly improve their chances by joining A-Team and re-applying the following year.”

By creating multiple levels of meaningful involvement, the BYU Student Chapter has built a structure that supports great programming and helps students feel connected and ready to grow into leadership roles and advance their Information Systems future.
