Course Coordinators: Professor Kalle Lyytinen and Professor Jonny Holmström

This doctoral seminar explores the complex world of digital information and objects, shedding light on their unique nature and importance within the larger context of information systems (IS) and related ideas. A thorough knowledge of these ideas is crucial for academics as the digital age continues to transform industries and societies. In addition to defining the differences between digital content, objects, and traditional IT concepts, this course also explores the theoretical, strategic, and ethical aspects that support their creation and manipulation.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this seminar, students will learn:

  • Digital Material, Digital Objects and how they differ from IT and related concepts from Kalle Lyytinen & Jonny Holmström.

  • Theorizing on Digital and Digital Strategy from Varun Grover.

  • Synthetic knowledge in the digital age from Eric Monterio.

  • Managing AI in organizational contexts from Elmira van den Broek.

  • Theorizing process data from Brain Pentland.

  • Digital Innovation Regimes from Kalle Lyytinen.

  • Digital Platforms and Platform Ecosystem from Marshall Van Alstyne.

  • Regulation of Digital Innovation from Tom Butler & Daniel Gozman.

  • Digital materials and data as objects from Jannis Kallinikos.

Student Expectations

  • Attend all the sessions.

  • Read the materials and prepare 2–3 questions about the material, which provides the baseline for discussions in the class.

The material can and should draw on the readings and presentations of the class and relate to your ongoing research study.
