What These Downloads Tell Us About 2025

Deadline for Nominations: February 24, 2026

The term of Denis Dennehy and Mary Tate as Co-Editors-in-Chief (EIC) of the Communications of the Association for Information Systems (CAIS) will conclude on May 31, 2026. We are now seeking a successor for an initial three-year term.

CAIS is one of the flagship journals of AIS, dedicated to fostering communication across the IS community by publishing work on a broad range of topics. The journal has a strong tradition of featuring original and influential research, methodological essays, policy pieces, panel reports, and thoughtful debates.

Selected candidates will be invited to interview via Zoom or a similar platform in February or thereafter. The nomination committee intends to recommend a single nominee (or a team of co-nominees) to the AIS Council for consideration at its March 2026 meeting. All AIS members are welcome to submit nominations, and self-nominations are strongly encouraged.

Qualifications for the EIC position include:

• A strong and demonstrated record of research in the field

• Editorial experience at a level involving final decision-making on submissions

• Dedication to CAIS and a compelling vision for strengthening its role as an influential scholarly outlet in the IS community

• A commitment to fostering intellectual diversity and pluralism across topics, methods, genres, viewpoints, and the composition of the editorial board

• The ability to manage the editorial process and oversee electronic journal publishing and dissemination effectively and efficiently

• A willingness to meet the demands of the EIC workload

• Institutional support for the candidate’s service in this role

We are pleased to announce the formation of SIG TECH (Technology to Enact Change), the newest Special Interest Group of the Association for Information Systems (AIS). SIG TECH offers a dedicated space for scholars and practitioners who are passionate about technical information systems research, especially those working on design oriented, data driven, or computational approaches. The group bridges an important gap in the IS field by spotlighting work that builds or redesigns IT artifacts to address complex business and societal challenges.

Since technical research underlies the “sociotechnical” core of the IS domain, SIG TECH aims to advance a research agenda that emphasizes design science, computational design, IS data science, and design oriented analytical modeling. By doing so, SIG TECH reinforces what makes IS distinct: not just studying technology or management but enabling and analyzing real systems and artifacts that create impact.

AIS Vice President of SIGs and Colleges, Julia Kotlarsky, PhD, says: "Technical IS research is critical for the future of our field. SIG TECH will help build a community of IS scholars with interests in the technical side of IS that advances impactful, artifact oriented scholarship within AIS.”

Community-Building and Convening

Beyond fostering scholarship, SIG TECH seeks to build a vibrant community. Members will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences, collaborate on projects, and participate in prototype demonstrations or tech tutorials. The group will also convene activities that help catalyze crosspollination among longstanding technical IS research communities.

A key milestone, the inaugural SIG TECH Workshop, is scheduled for ICIS 2025 in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. The workshop (December 17, 2025, 1:00–6:00 pm) will feature presentations of the best research from Workshop on Information Technologies and Systems (WITS), prototype demonstrations, and a panel discussion on “Technology, Design, and Information Systems.”

SIG TECH President Ahmed Abbasi, PhD, remarked, "SIG TECH brings a wealth of expertise from the WITS community, related to the design of Artificial Intelligence systems. The Nominating Committee for the 2026 Council Elections will assemble a ballot early in 2026. The committee’s charge this year is to assemble a high-quality slate of candidates for the following open positions:

  • President-Elect (R3)
  • Vice President of Region 1
  • Vice President of Region 2
  • Vice President of Community Openness, Responsibility, and Ethics (C.O.R.E.)

The responsibilities for each position are listed in the Bylaws that can be found at: https://aisnet.org/page/AISBylaws (Bylaw 6)

In accordance with the AIS Bylaw Section 7.3. E. Nominating Procedure. All nominees, whether selected by the Nominating Committee or via petition, should meet the following qualifications to appear on the final ballot:

A. Nominees should be a member in good standing for at least three years prior to their nomination and agree to remain a member in good standing for the duration of their time on Council, if elected.

B. Nominees should be long-standing members of the information systems community and be at least 8 years post earning their Ph.D. or equivalent.

C. The post-8-year Ph.D. requirement can be relaxed by the Nominating Committee if the candidate has served at least three cumulative years as AVP, VP, or in an AIS Conference Chair role, Program Chair role, or equivalent.

D. Nominees of regional positions should have lived in the region that they wish to represent for at least three years prior to their nomination.

E. Nominees should agree to provide sufficient time to effectively carry out their duties to the Association.

AIS Council meets four times annually. Two meetings are virtual (March and September), and the other two are in the summer and in December. Barring any global issues preventing us from meeting face-to-face, we hope to continue in person and offer a hybrid option for those unable to travel. Depending on their position, active members of the Council spend approximately 8-10 hours per month fulfilling their volunteer duties.

Members will also be able to add their names to the ballot as write-in candidates after the ballot is announced in January 2026.

For organizer Dr. Jignya Patel, it was her first time putting together an event like this, and the experience proved valuable for everyone involved.

Three doctoral students applied to participate, each at a different stage in their research development. "This diversity made for very rich and engaging discussions and valuable feedback for all participants - students and faculty," Patel explained. With approximately 10-15 attendees, the intimate setting allowed for meaningful exchanges. All student participants reported receiving feedback that was both meaningful and actionable.

The chapter took a practical approach to organizing the event. Dr. Craig Van Slyke, one of the mentors, was already scheduled to attend the conference. Dr. Dezhi Yin from the University of South Florida made the trip specifically to volunteer his time for the consortium. "We're deeply grateful to both mentors for volunteering their time," Dr. Patel said. The chapter covered hosting expenses through its general operating funds, keeping costs manageable while maintaining quality.

SAIS Logo The positive reception has convinced the chapter to make this an annual event. For Dr. Patel, the goal is clear: "continue building a supportive environment where doctoral students receive early, constructive feedback from experienced mentors to help strengthen their research."

It's a good reminder that impactful chapter initiatives don't always require large budgets or complex logistics. Sometimes what matters most is creating the right environment, connecting generous mentors with emerging scholars, and supporting the next generation of IS researchers.

  • Instant Receipt
    Each message sent to AISWorld is delivered to your inbox immediately. This option is best for members who want the most up-to-date announcements without delay.
  • Daily Digest
    Instead of receiving multiple individual emails, you will receive a single email each day that summarizes all of the AISWorld postings from the previous 24 hours. This option is convenient for members who prefer fewer emails in their inbox while still keeping up with all updates.

How to Change Your Delivery Settings

You can update your AISWorld ListServ subscription preferences at any time. Follow these steps:

  1. Login to Lsoft at this URL https://listserv.isworld.org/.
  2. In the "Subscriber Options" tab, select the three horizontal bars on the far right and choose "Subscribe or Unsubscribe".

In the dropdown under "Mail Style", you have three options:

  • Regular – You will receive postings immediately.
  • Digest – This combines multiple messages into a single email. You will receive a single daily digest that is sent at Noon US ET daily with postings from the prior 24 hours. You can choose between a traditional (plain text) or HTML format.

Thank you to all those who presented, attended, sponsored, and volunteered during AMCIS 2025, held in Montréal, Canada. AMCIS 2025 was the largest attended conference in its history. The keynote speakers, paper sessions, panels, spotlight sessions, and consortia were all a success.

The AMCIS 2025 proceedings are now available in the AIS eLibrary, offering all accepted completed research and ERF papers published under the theme “Intelligent Technologies for a Better Future” . In addition to the papers themselves, the eLibrary features author-produced videos, so you can hear directly from researchers in pre-recorded presentations. A highlight this year is the AuthorConnect platform, embedded on each paper’s landing page which enables AIS members to request virtual meetings with authors and sign up for live discussions on their research topics . The Association for Information Systems is pleased to welcome six new council members effective September 1, 2025.

Michel Aivtal begins his three- year term as the newly elected AIS VP Publications.  Marie-Claude Boudreau begins her three-year term as the newly elected AIS VP Conferences.  Heiko Gewald joins AIS Council as the ICIS Representative, after co-hosting a fantastic ICIS 2024 in Bangkok. Michael Chau also joins AIS Council as the newly elected VP Region 3 Representative. Jens Dibbern is beginning his term as the new VP Member Services and Chapters.   

September 1 also involves the annual new roles of the elected AIS Presidents with Dorothy Leidner, University of Virginia, beginning her role as the association's 31st AIS President. Andrew Burton-Jones, The University of Queensland, has become the Immediate Past President of the AIS Council. We extend our sincere welcome to Jan vom Brocke, University of Münster, who begins his term as the Association’s President-Elect.  All three Presidents will serve on the AIS Council as well as on the AIS Leadership Team.   Nancy Pouloudi, Athens University of Economics and Business, concludes her term as Immediate Past-President and has transitioned to the AIS Member-at-Large position on Council. Under her tenure, Pouloudi enhanced the efficiency and financial sustainability of AIS activities and strengthened the organization’s global reputation. She championed inclusivity, fostered greater engagement within the community, and positioned AIS to thrive in the evolving digital landscape. During her term as President, AIS established the Industry Advisory Board and two new Member Codes of Conduct. We extend our gratitude for her hard work and the lasting impact of her leadership.

Jan vom Brocke

Jan is an AIS Fellow with over 20 years of experience developing academic institutions. He is the Head of the Information Systems Department at the University of Münster and Director of ERCIS, leading collaborations with 100+ research and industry partners across Europe, the Americas, and the Asia-Pacific. He also holds positions as Honorary Distinguished Professor at Maynooth University in Ireland and Academic Research Fellow at the MIT Center for Information Systems Research. His globally impactful work includes widely cited publications in top journals, teaching in over 20 countries, and securing more than $60 million in public and private funding.

Michel Avital

Michel is a Professor of Digitalization at Copenhagen Business School, Denmark. He previously held faculty positions at the University of Amsterdam and Case Western Reserve University. An advocate of openness and cross-boundary collaboration, Michel’s research explores how digital innovation ecosystems shape organizational practices. He has published over 100 articles on the development and impact of emerging technologies and serves in leadership roles across journals and conferences. He also collaborates with start-ups, enterprises, and government agencies to harness emerging technologies for innovation and sustainable growth.

Marie-Claude Boudreau

Marie is an Associate Professor of MIS at the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business, where she served as MIS Department Head from 2012 to 2023. Her research examines how information systems—such as integrated and open-source software—drive organizational change and support sustainability (Green IS). She has led interdisciplinary collaborations and secured multiple research grants in these areas. Her work appears in MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Organization Science, and the Journal of the AIS.

Jens Dibbern

Jens Dibbern

Since 2009, Jens has been a Professor of Information Systems at the University of Bern, Switzerland. He has served as Associate Editor for MIS Quarterly and Department Editor for JAIS and JSIS, as well as in leadership roles at ICIS and Wirtschaftsinformatik. He also served two terms as President of the Swiss Chapter of AIS, where he helped strengthen the local IS academic network and launched the International Conference on Information Systems Sourcing (ICOIS). His research focuses on IT services management, digital ventures, and human-AI interaction.

Michael Chau

Michael is a Full Professor of Innovation and Information Management at the HKU Business School, University of Hong Kong. His research lies at the intersection of information systems, computer science, business analytics, and information science, focusing on data, text, and web mining applications. He has published over 80 refereed journal papers and serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Information Management and Senior Editor of MIS Quarterly. In 2016, he received the AIS Sandra Slaughter Service Award.

Heiko Gewald

Heiko Gewald is research professor of Information Management at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences in Germany and Director of the Institute for Digital Innovation (IDI). He holds an MSc in Business Administration from University of Bamberg, an EMBSc from Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh and a PhD in Information Systems from Goethe University Frankfurt. He is an Honorary Visiting Professor at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.

Heiko was conference co-chair of ICIS 2024 in Bangkok.
