AIS welcomes the India Chapter to the growing ranks of AIS Chapters. The India Chapter will serve India and promote the exchange of ideas, experiences, and knowledge among scholars and professionals in India engaged in the development, management, and use of information systems and technology.

"AIS is excited about the growth of the Information Systems community in India," said Jason Thatcher, president of AIS. "We look forward to supporting the new AIS India chapter through member services, access to the library, and participation at conferences.  AIS leadership believes the future is bright for India and for scholarship in India!"

Approved as an official chapter of AIS by the AIS Council in December, the India chapter will focus on four main areas of service to members, including:

  • Providing a locally-focused forum for those concerned with all aspects of information systems;
  • Providing an opportunity for the exchange of ideas concerning the management of information systems with member counterparts;
  • Conducting locally-focused programs and conferences for the benefit of members;
  • Providing a means for critical examination of the problems and opportunities associated with information systems in the designated country of the chapter’s defined community;
  • Enhancing the perception of information systems as a discipline in the larger canvas of management and related disciplines in the Indian context.

"It has been more than four decades since research and teaching in the information systems discipline in India was initiated," said Rahul De, AIS-India Chapter president. "The time for an India chapter of the AIS is just right given the strong presence of information technology and related sectors in both the Indian economy as well as in academic institutions.  The founding team believes entrenching our presence deeper in academic institutions by creating awareness of the discipline's importance and uniqueness; fostering high quality research by encouraging young researchers; and creating a strong domestic network of academicians as well as practitioners are amongst our immediate goals."

The chapter, located in AIS Region 3, will be led by India Chapter president Rahul De of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. Other members of the chapter leadership team include Sanjay Verma, vice president, Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad; Priya Seetharaman, secretary, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta; and Saji Mathew, treasurer, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

"The AIS team has informed us that there is no domicile requirement to be part of a Chapter," said De. "Anyone who is in anyway connected to India - roots and arms, is always welcome to be a member of the AIS India Chapter.  We hope the Chapter will provide its members a unique forum to connect to others who have an interest in India as well."
