The Thailand Chapter of AIS (THAIS) is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in driving positive change and innovation in the field of Information Systems. In response to the increasing importance of IS in the country, the need for a collaborative platform where professionals, academics, and students could convene became evident. The origin of THAIS can be traced back to discussions that began in 2019 within the local IS community. After formal approval by AIS in September 2021, THAIS swiftly gained momentum, attracting approximately 80 members and experiencing a steady increase in participation.
Central to THAIS's evolution is its commitment to promoting IS research, education, and professional development. Through public community programs and partnerships with AIS chapters regionally and globally. THAIS has facilitated knowledge exchange and collaboration, amplifying its impact on the global IS landscape. Founding member and THAIS President Dr. Savanid (Nui) Vatanasakdakul says, “Our chapter’s evolution has been guided by a commitment to serving the needs and interests of our members, staying abreast of developments in the field, and contributing to the advancement of IS research, practice, and education in Thailand. We look forward to continuing to grow and evolve in the years to come, adapting to new challenges and opportunities in the ever-changing landscape of IS.” Members of THAIS share success stories that highlight the chapter's initiatives aimed at raising awareness and advocating for the importance of IS across various sectors. Notably, THAIS organized the first-ever online forum gathering IS researchers from across Thailand, fostering discussions on the past, present, and future of the IS community in the country. Such endeavors have garnered recognition from both international and Thai media outlets, further elevating THAIS's visibility and influence. For example, the chapter’s work has been highlighted in a formal announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Thailand and endorsed by the Royal Thai Embassy in Doha. Looking ahead, THAIS is excited for the International Conference in Information Systems (ICIS) in Bangkok, marking a significant milestone as the first Southeast Asian host of ICIS. THAIS is committed to nurturing the local networks as part of the global community through initiatives like a pre-ICIS 2024 workshop, which aims to foster networking opportunities and discussions on emerging IS research topics. As THAIS continues to evolve, adapt, and embrace new challenges and opportunities, it remains steadfast in its mission to empower and advance the IS community in Thailand. The chapter leadership has made a commitment to ensure that the IS research community in Thailand will continue to grow even after ICIS 2024. With a focus on collaboration, innovation, and excellence, THAIS stands poised to shape the future of IS in Thailand and beyond. Established in 2021, the Thailand chapter of AIS has been recognized as an AIS Outstanding Community for its first year of eligibility.
