The AMCIS Outstanding Conference Service Leadership Committee has selected the first AMCIS Outstanding Conference Service Leadership Award winners. This award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the form of service leadership to AMCIS. The winners of this award have shown substantial engagement with one or more AMCIS conferences and/or AMCIS ancillary events in a leadership position over a period of time.

The first AMCIS Outstanding Conference Service Leadership Award recipients honored in Minneapolis are:

  • Alanah Mitchell, Drake University
  • Rob Nickerson, San Francisco State University
  • Stacie Petter, Wake Forest University

Alanah Mitchell Accepting Award from Traci Carte,
VP of Conferences

Throughout her involvement with AIS, Alanah Mitchell has served in several AMCIS roles. Specifically, she served as a Program Co-Chair in 2016, and will do so again in 2023. She has also been a Track Chair, Mini-Track Chair, Session Chair, Volunteer Coordinator, and Volunteer. These conference leadership roles prepared Mitchell to serve as the first Associate Vice President of Conference Management Systems for AMCIS, a role in which she served from 2017-2020. This AVP position was a significant volunteer service effort requiring weekly meetings with the AMCIS Program Chairs for three years in a row (New Orleans, Cancun, and Salt Lake City/Virtual). In addition, Mitchell has served on numerous AMCIS committees and task forces.

Rob Nickerson has been an AMCIS stalwart for many years, supporting AMCIS and AIS in several roles.  Nickerson along with his co-chair and committee hosted AMCIS 2009 in San Francisco, the highest attended AMCIS on record.  Due to Nickerson’s hard work and dedication, AMCIS 2009 was also a conference of ‘firsts’, with a Poster Session, opportunity for SIGs to host workshops and business meetings, innovations that thrive today.  Following AMCIS 2009, Nickerson was elected VP Conferences and served on the AIS Council for 3 years. Nickerson, co-chair, and committee were selected a second time to host AMCIS 2016 in San Diego where again he developed a program full of ‘firsts’.  AMCIS 2016 was the first conference to include 2 tracks for Doctoral Consortium students, offering a late-stage track and mid-stage track.  The conference program included two keynote sessions, where attendees had the opportunity to hear from first and former CIO of the Department of Navy and the Director of Global Sales & Business Development at ESRI, the dominant player in the GIS software market.  AMCIS 2016 was the first and only conference (thus far) to be catered by food trucks.  Nickerson served on the AMCIS Executive Committee prior to, during and after each conference, offering his experience, insight, innovations, inspiration, and visionary spirit.
