AIS Honors Leaders in the field at ICIS 2021

The Association for Information Systems honored leaders in the field of information systems during the 2021 International Conference on Information Systems. Honorees have continued to work tirelessly to educate, research, and serve the field through continued engagement and contribution.

The AIS Leadership Excellence Award is given annually to a single person for leadership and innovation in the use and development of information systems. Dantley Davis is the recipient of the 2021 AIS Leadership Excellence Award.

The AIS LEO Award for Lifetime Exceptional Achievement in information systems, named after one of the world’s first commercial applications of computing (The Lyons Electronic Office), recognizes truly outstanding individuals in the information systems community, both academics and practitioners, who have made exceptional contributions to research in and/or the practice of information systems. 2021 LEO Award winners include:

The AIS Fellow Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the information systems discipline in terms of research, teaching and service. 2021 AIS Fellows include:

The AIS Impact Award recognizes information systems research with widespread impact on practice in business and society. The key criteria are breadth of use in practice as well as relevance to information systems research. The assessment of the quality of the work is considered secondary to the degree to which it has been widely adopted. 2021 Impact Award Winners include:

  • Edgar Whitley and Roser Pujadas for their work on Consumer Privacy Regulation in UK Financial Services
  • Joe Valacich, Jeff Jenkins for their work on Neuro-ID Behavioral Analytics
  • Karin Väyrynen, Arto Lanamäki for their work on Technology Regulation in the Finnish Taxi Industry
  • Carmen Leong, Felix Ter Chian Tan, Amelia Fauzia, Fithra Faisal for their work on Empowering Digital Entrepreneurs in Rural Asian Communities
  • Roman Beck, Christoph Mueller-Bloch, John L. King for their work on Development of International Standards for Blockchain Governance

The AIS Vision Award is given to those who have contributed to the technology vision for the association. The VISION award is given to those who have articulated a strategic thrust for the association. The 2021 AIS Vision Award winners are:

  • Frantz Rowe, Redouane El Amrani and Moez Limayem as ECIS 2021 co-chairs
  • Yolande Chan and Marie-Claude Boudreau as AMCIS 2021 co-chairs
  • Doug Vogel, Kathy Ning Shen and Pan Shan Ling as PACIS 2021 co-chairs
  • Joey George and Souren Paul as ICIS 2020 co-chairs

The AIS ATLAS Award is given to those individuals who have made the most significant contributions toward the intellectual infrastructure of the association. The ATLAS Award winners included:

  • Benoit Aubert, Guy Pare and Wynne Chin, AMCIS 2021 Program Chairs

The AIS Technology Challenge Award is given to those who make a significant contribution to the development of a community of IS scholars. At the start of the pandemic our colleagues identified a need for an inclusive space to discuss the implications of the pandemic on higher education and the field of IS. Through quick thinking, platform testing and more, the AIS COVID-19 Forum was created. Blake Ives, Munir Mandviwalla and Rick Watson were honored with the 2021 AIS Technology Challenge Award.

The AIS Outreach Practice Publication Award recognizes practice-based publications that have made a great impact by transferring research findings successfully to practitioner audiences. The 2021 AIS Outreach Practice Publication Award was awarded to Barbara Wixom for her piece: “Data is everybody’s business”.

Each year, AIS recognizes those who have made important and innovative strides in information systems education by awarding three different awards to deserving candidates at the International Conference of Information Systems. The winner of the AIS Award for Outstanding Contribution to IS Education went to Simha Magal.

The AIS Award for Innovation in Teaching recognizes innovation in teaching approaches/techniques (pedagogy) as well as in delivering courses and programs. This award specifically focuses on the uniqueness/innovativeness that increases student interest and drives achievement. The 2021 Innovation in Teaching awards include:

The Senior Scholars have annually recognized up to five papers with a Best Information Systems (IS) Publications Award. This award was established to recognize the breadth of high quality work that is being published in the information systems discipline, and was designed to bring outstanding papers across a range of journals to the attention of the IS community, and to give due credit to the journals in which they are published. 2021 winners include:

  • Brent Kitchens, Steven L. Johnson and Peter Gray (2020) Understanding Echo Chambers and Filter Bubbles: The Impact of Social Media on Diversification and Partisan Shifts in News Consumption, MIS Quarterly.
  • Tor Grønsunda and Margunn Aanestad (2020) Augmenting the algorithm: Emerging human-in-the-loop work configurations, Journal of Strategic Information Systems.
  • Nishtha Langer, Ram D. Gopal and Ravi Bapna, (2020) Onward and Upward? An Empirical Investigation of Gender and Promotions in Information Technology Services, Information Systems Research.
  • Jens Lausen, Benjamin Clapham, Michael Siering, and Peter Gomber (2020) Who Is the Next “Wolf of Wall Street”? Detection of Financial Intermediary Misconduct, Journal of the Association for Information Systems.

For many years ACM SIG MIS has committed to sponsoring the Dissertation Awards and again this year they have sponsored this outstanding award. The 2021 ACM SIG MIS Best Dissertation Awards include:

  • Runner Up: Qinglai He, Arizona State University, for the dissertation titled “Online Platform Policy and User Engagement”. Quinglai is now at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
  • Runner Up: Bowen Lou, University of Pennsylvania for the dissertation titled “Are Ideas Really Harder to Find? Essays on Analytics Driven and Artificial Intelligence Enabled Innovation”. Bowen is now at the University of Connecticut.
  • First: Mohammadreza (Reza) Ebrahimi, The University of Arizona, Eller College of Management for the dissertation titled “AI Enabled Cybersecurity Analytics: Detecting and Defending against Cyber Threats”. Reza is now at the University of South Florida.

ICIS 2021 also featured numerous excellent papers, which were awarded during the Tuesday Keynote presentation.
