This April 9 and 10, AIS Student Chapter members from around the world met to attend the virtual AIS 2021 Student Chapter Leadership Conference hosted by Illinois State University. In total there were 267 registrants (234 students and 33 faculty) representing 47 universities and 4 countries. Students learned from industry professionals, hosted leadership workshops, and earned awards for their competition solutions. The competition judging committees represented both industry and academia.

“Our student chapter members demonstrated incredible creativity and professionalism during this year’s competitions,” shared AIS AVP of Student Chapters Alex Barsi Lopes. “The talent and hard work put into the solutions shows that the future of Information Systems is bright.”

Congratulations to the following competition winners!

AIS Software Innovation Competition:
The United Nations has adopted a series of Sustainable Development Goals which work to improve society with a focus on ending poverty, protecting the planet, and ensuring prosperity for all. This challenge allowed students to demonstrate the impact that IS can have in improving the world in which we all live.

HP Design Thinking Competition:
With changes in the workplace caused by the COVID pandemic, project teams have had to work remotely while maintaining productivity. The use of several communication platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams became widespread over the last year but those tend to be too generic to adequately support a team working on a project where communication and document sharing are vital but also context specific. The HP Design Thinking Challenge was an opportunity to design a solution.
  • Together- Brigham Young University
  • Kaigi- James Madison University
  • Diversify3000- Brigham Young University

Showcase Competition:
Teams who did not place during the finalist rounds of the competition tracks were able to present their case solutions in the Showcase Competition held throughout the conference. The selected winners are:

  • University of North Texas (Good to GO) from the HP Design Thinking Competition Track
  • University of Gdansk (Talk_To) from the AIS SW Innovation Challenge Competition Track
  • University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (Collabi) from the HP Design Thinking Competition Track

We are also pleased to announce the winners of two key faculty leadership awards as Faculty Advisor of the Year was awarded to Thomas Meservy of Brigham Young University and Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Steve Sclarow of Temple University.
