For doctoral students, attending an AIS conference is more than an opportunity to present research, it is a chance to connect with the global Information Systems community, receive valuable feedback, and build relationships that can shape an academic career. The AIS & Bocconi PhD Student Travel Grant helps make those opportunities possible.
In 2025, one of the grant recipients, Adiata Borresa, traveled from Ghana to attend AMCIS 2025, an experience that would not have been possible without the financial support.
“I know without it, I really wouldn’t be able to make it to AMCIS.”
A PhD candidate in Information Systems at the University for Development Studies in Ghana, she discovered the travel grant while exploring the AIS website after registering for the conference. Although she initially questioned whether she had a chance of being selected, encouragement from her advisor convinced her to apply.
Today, she is making history as the first female PhD candidate in Information Systems at her university. After earning her undergraduate degree in accounting and finance, she realized her passion was technology and Information Systems. She went on to complete a master’s degree in Management Information Systems and is now pursuing doctoral research while also teaching courses including Accounting Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Systems Analysis and Design, and Information Systems Ethics.
At AMCIS 2025, she presented her research on human-AI collaboration in higher education, examining the tensions and contradictions that can arise when artificial intelligence is integrated into teaching and learning within the context of Ghanaian universities.
Beyond presenting her work, she viewed the conference as an opportunity to connect with researchers whose work had inspired her throughout her studies.
“I really hope to network. I want to meet the amazing people whose papers I’ve read but never met in person. I believe in sharing ideas, and I know the ideas I get from others will make my own research better.”
Her experience reflects the purpose of the AIS & Bocconi PhD Student Travel Grant: helping promising doctoral students participate in the international AIS community regardless of financial barriers. Through conference participation, recipients gain exposure to new research, receive constructive feedback, establish professional connections, and become active contributors to the future of the Information Systems discipline.
The AIS & Bocconi PhD Student Travel Grant awards up to six travel grants of $1,750 each year to doctoral students attending eligible AIS conferences. Applications are reviewed based on factors including doctoral progress, expected benefits of conference participation, and involvement in conference activities.
If you’re a PhD student planning to attend a future AIS conference, consider applying for the travel grant. It could be the opportunity that helps transform your conference experience, and your academic journey.
Application Deadline for ICIS is September 15
