While mainframes continue to serve as the backbone of the global business IT infrastructure, in particular when it comes to mission-critical, high-volume online transaction and data processing, they are considered outdated by many and therefore have silently disappeared from academia in research and teaching during the last decades. Among other effects, this has lead to an increasing shortage of related skills and understanding among university graduates, as well as on the labor market  In contrast to the academic perception, in recent years mainframes and in particular the IBM Z platform have evolved into extremely powerful high-end servers, designed and build using the most recent, state-of-the-art technologies of hard- and software. With many unique features regarding e.g. vertical scalability and security, as well as their broad support of modern open source software, mainframes provide an alternative paradigm to the distributed, cloud-oriented system architectures dominating research and education today. Therefore, the mainframe platform and its current perception, usage and role in business IS has a large potential for future research activities, which have rarely been investigated so far, not only technological, but even more from a socio-technical or organizational IS perspective. However, to enable students to understand enterprise computing and the mainframe paradigm, so they later could grow into related research activities, mainframe computing needs to be included as a regular part of the academic business information systems (IS) education as well. Therefore, in this workshop the current state of the academic mainframe education will be revisited, currently existing academic course offerings will be presented and future opportunities, possible initiatives and next steps will be discussed.
