Promoting Sustainable Behavior in the Smart Home

The unprecedented fragility of fossil energy systems makes a sustainability transformation more pressing than ever. Over a fifth of global CO2 emissions is related to residential energy consumption. As we increasingly spend time at home, the domestic lever for consumption reduction and grid stability continues to grow. And with more and more smart technologies entering our homes, new potentials emerge. Yet, our theoretical understanding of how such technologies can help individuals engage in more sustainable behaviors to contribute to climate neutrality remains limited. In this webinar, we share insights from a multi-stakeholder study on the flow of actions that direct individuals toward sustainable behaviors. We will outline some unique characteristics of smart technologies and behavioral determinants. In addition, we aim to begin a discussion on the - yet unclear - role of technology in driving individuals´ contribution behavior.

Technology Integration by Electric Utilities; Patterns, Motivation, Challenges, and Success Metrics, Practices and Influence of the Field

The energy culture as a whole and the electric industry in specific are going through a wide-scale disruptive and consequential transformation. The pressures for this transformation come from three different fronts: digitalization, distributed resources, and decarbonization. Over the last decade, in response to these pressures, electric utilities have been adopting technology solutions, including Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and various enterprise-wide systems. Now, their focus has shifted toward integrating these massive investments into their existing infrastructure to develop new capabilities and services. However, the real value of these technologies depends on their successful integration of these technologies. This 3-essay format dissertation research explores the patterns, motivations, challenges, success metrics, work practices, and influence of the organizational field. In this webinar, I will report on some of the findings of why, when, and how utilities are integrating these technology solutions into their existing structure and infrastructure. This research hopes to lay the foundation for developing the theory of technology integration by organizations.
