Answers

How do I access the site?

The site is located at emisq.isworld.org. Individual articles are behind the login and passwords of the Association for Information Systems - that is the same logins members use for accessing JAIS, CAIS, or your own personal member information. However, this is not a live update, so if you change your AIS password there may be a delay of a week or more before you can access the MIS Quarterly archive using your new password

.

I can't see the files. What tools do I need?

Almost all of the files are in Postscript Display Format (PDF). Go here for downloading the PDF reader for your particular computing environment. Some articles (e.g., editorial statements are also in HTML).

Why are the files so big?

The most recent files were initiallly created as PDF documents. The files prior to 2000, however, were created by scanning the documents and then converting them, using optical character recognition techniques to machine readable form. Essentially, there are two versions within each of these older files - one an optical copy, similar to a photocopy, and then the machine readable version. These files are five to ten times larger than the more recent, native, PDF files.

Why are the older articles more difficult to read?

See the above explanation. These are not native PDF files but rather scans of paper copies. For the most part, however, they are readable . In the worse case you may, as you have had to do in the past, go to the library or purchase a copy from the MIS Quarterly offices.

Why are the abstracts not searchable?

While there is currently no abstract only search capability, the abstracts should be included within the "content" search. However, as they are in italics and somewhat smaller text, there may be words in the abstract that, while visible to the eye, were not understandable to the text recognition software. Thus some words that appear in the abstracts may not be picked up by a full-text search

Who is the Publisher?

The publisher of the Management Information Systems Quarterly is the University of Minnesota. The publisher of the electronic archive is Baylor University, with the direct oversight of Reagan Ramsower, Baylor's Chief Information Systems Officer and, as of 2002, AIS Vice President for Strategic Initiatives.

What Technology is being used to support this site?

Software is running under Microsoft IIS server using MicrosoftÕs ASP Web Development environment. Scripts are written in VB Script. The database is Sequel Server.

Who updates the content?

The agreement between AIS and the MiS Quarterly calls for AIS to put the archive on-line. However, for convenience and speed, we are hopeful that Jan DeGross (Jdegross@csom.umn.edu), of the University of Minnesota, willl update the site as part of the normal publication process for the journal.

I am an AIS Member but cannot access the articles. What do I do?

Contact AIS headquarters

Can I share my password with my students or others?

No

.

Can my students use the articles in the database?

You are welcome to print individual articles for use by students in not-for-profit educational activities. You may also put articles in on-line teaching support systems, as long as they are protected by a password only accessible to students and teaching staff and for not-for profit uses. Permission must be obtained from the MIS Quarterly offices at the Univesity of Minnesota for any other uses of the archive or articles within it.

What is the nature of the relationship between AIS and MIS Quarterly?

This is desribed in the MIS Quarterly-AIS alliance document . The simple version is that the MiS Quarterly is not a publicfation of the the AIS, but rather is made available to our members through a multi-year agreement. That relationship is overseen by the MIS Quarterly Policy Committee.

Who is on the MIS Quarterly Policy Committee?

The members of the MIS Quarterly Policy Committee is accessible from the AIS Directory. AIS provides two members, including the Vice President of Publications and a second member selected by the Current President, Past President, and President Elect of AIS. Two other representatives are selected by the University of Minnesota. The final member of the Policy Committee is the Editor-in-Chief of the Management Informatiion Systems Quarterly.

Is the MIS Quarterly electronic archive accessible by Libraries?

Not yet?

I am an AIS Institutional member. Do I have access to the archive?

You and the other four individuals covered by your institutional membership do have access. If you do not, please contact AIS headquarters. Others in your institution, however, will not have electronic access. This may be something that we will make possible at some future point.
