Bill was the chair of the organizing committee and the founding President (1995) and first Executive Director of the Association for Information Systems. His service to thefield also includes research, advisor to many IS doctoral graduates, journaleditor, and active leadership in AIS, ICIS, and TIMS.

Bill is the University Professorof the University of Pittsburgh, the highest ranking among the University.

He is the author of approximately300 publications, including 13 books in information systems, strategic planning, and management science. He served as Editor-in-Chief for MISQuarterly from 1983 to 1985. He conceived of, developed, and led theprocess of creating a new journal, Information Systems Research.

Bill served as the Presidentof The Institute of Management Science (TIMS). As President, he conceivedof and implemented a merger planning process with the Operations ResearchSociety of America, that resulted in the creation of INFORMS.

He was one of the approximately30 founders of ICIS. Bill served as General Chairman for the InternationalConference on Information Systems (ICIS) in 1987 and as Chair of the ICISExecutive Committee. He was was chair of the first Americas Conferenceon Information Systems in Pittsburgh in 1995.

The many honors Bill hasreceived include being named a “Fellow” by the Decision Sciences Instituteand the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Bill alsoreceived a McKinsey Foundation award as co-author of Systems Analysis andProject Management, reviewed as “a significant contribution to the literatureof management,” the IIE “Book of the Year” award, and the ISBUG Award.

Bill’s services to the Universityof Pittsburgh are highlighted by the creation, implementation and directionof a unique double degree program (MBA-MS in Management of InformationSystems). He also created, implemented, and directed the modern versionof the Katz School’s Doctoral program, which quickly grew ten-fold in sizeand has been ranked among the top 15 doctoral programs in the United States.He was a cofounder of the Telecommunications Graduate Program at the Universityof Pittsburgh.

Bill served as principalinvestigator on an IBM Management of Information Systems Grant (one of13 competitively awarded grants) as well as numerous research grants fromNSF, the United States Air Force, and other organizations.
